2018 – An amazing year (More murals inside! more insights for your consideration!)

Dreams do come true

2018 is a year where i seen all sort of stories of young people breaking through in their lives. One of the most prominent one is a young Korean man that flew all the way from Korea 10 years ago to help his uncle run his Korean BBQ restaurant. and 10 years later, he finally raised enough money to open his own restaurant at Taman Equine!

This restaurant is now run by him and his Korean wife. And i came in to help them construct a mural depiction in the center of the restaurant – a 4m x 3m high mural depicting 3 friends having tea.

It is common in Korea to have such murals styles in their restaurants. Looking back, before i came in, they had close to no decoration for the restaurant and because of murals, they now look authentic. People have started coming in to their restaurant even before their opening! We wish them the best in their business.

Our advice is: Use a white background mural on a black wall! It stands out so much better.

The largest mural we ever undertake to date!

We were invited to paint a mural for a playground somewhere in PJ. The client wanted something warm and cute for the children. The challenge is, the mural is 10 meters long! (equivalent to 3 shoplots side by side) and 7 meters high! (3 stories high). The first time we saw it we were overwhelmed by the sheer size and complexity however, we were also thrilled by excitement!

We have in total 28 animals in the mural!

We have our partner graphic designers to design the wall. This wall alone took us 14 days with about 14 hours a day and we marathon to finish it. We worked on top a scaffolding on top a ladder 50% of the time trying to reach the top areas of the wall. Nevertheless, it was a total sense of accomplishment by the end of the day.

Our advice is: The larger the wall, the more details are required in order to look good. Do not expand an art too large otherwise in a close distance like the one in the playground, no one can fully contain the mural in their vision. Therefore we have a lot of characters and details in a large wall. Do engage a graphic designer for this kind of job.

Kantin Martin – The cutest wall ever!

We received a request to draw cartoons for a Malay restaurant somewhere near Ara Damansara. Not mega size – the wall is about 5m long and 3.5m high. It is as below.

Nevertheless, so cute

The funniest and most challenging part of doing this is to deliver the logo on the top right of the wall! To accomplish it, we actually have to climb right on top at the corner using nothing but a ladder. The floor is still slightly slippery due to the tiles and oil. Then we carried a large pail (The ones they use to wash their dishes with about 1m in diameter) and we cup it on the wall as we trace the round circle on it! Would your legs tremble on the way up? The rest is standard procedure. I have never felt so insecure in all our projects before but i’m glad we done it!

(right) People are thinking of food while they are queuing up!

Our advice is: The restaurant did a right thing by decorating the wall so that the insides of the restaurant do not look so empty. A purely empty restaurant in an interior perspective doesn’t give the customers the feeling of abundance because all they will feel eating inside is a sense of emptiness.

Constructing a mini town!

This has to be the most fun inquiry ever! We are requested to lay road markings on top of rubber mats covered all over the kindergraden situated in Mont Kiara. The kindergarden business owner wants to build a mini town for her students. It is literally a dream come true for me when i was a kid! Where would you be able to find a kindergarden like this! You can see the video below on how the end results looked like.

To achieve this, we have to use lasers and tapes to ensure a straight line over the 6 meters road. Then each dash line has to be individually measured with accuracy. Each lines are given at least 5 layers of paint to ensure solid colours and bumps to represent real roads conditions. We even added trees and owls all over the place. Eventually we painted the straight lines perfectly.

It was truely an honour to create this mini petrol station for the kids!

Our advice is: Some works requires straight lines to look good. Without it, it will look pretty bad. Therefore it is wise to take some time to consider whether a not how the straight lines will affect your artworks.

We have more jobs that year but this are the ones that are most memorable to us. We hope this stories and insights could assist anyone of you in making the right decisions on whether a not murals are suitable for you and your business. We look forward to an amazing journey ahead of us in 2019!

Lastly, i personally thank you again to those who trusted and believed in us, without your opportunities, we wouldn’t have such a blast in 2018! I wish you all the best in 2019 as well.

Sincerely,

Han
